2026–2027 SEASON AGE GROUP FORMAT UPDATE

Beginning with the 2026–2027 soccer season, major governing organizations including U.S. Club Soccer, U.S. Youth Soccer, and AYSO will implement a nationwide change to how youth soccer age groups are formed.

What Is Changing?

• Current system: January 1 – December 31 (calendar-year birth grouping)

• New system: August 1 – July 31 (school-year based grouping)

Important: The Spring 2026 season will remain unchanged. The new format officially begins with the 2026–2027 seasonal year.

Why This Change Is Being Made

This decision was made nationally to improve the overall youth soccer experience and development pathway for players across the country. Key reasons include:

Reducing “Trapped Players”
Some players currently placed in older age groups than their school peers miss important developmental opportunities. The new structure helps prevent this situation.

Aligning Soccer With School Years
An August 1 cut-off aligns with how most schools group students, allowing players to compete alongside classmates and friends.

Creating Nationwide Consistency
All major youth soccer organizations adopting the same standard reduces confusion for families, leagues, tournaments, and clubs.
Benefits for Players
• More opportunities to play with school-year peers
• Fewer roster disruptions year to year
• More consistent development environment
• Improved long-term player experience
Benefits for Families
• Easier scheduling around school calendars
• Clearer team placement expectations
• Reduced stress during transitions between age groups
